Name, title and company name?
Alice Whiteley, Managing Director, YAWN.
In five words, tell us what your business does?
Gorgeous nightwear for relaxing in.
When did you know that you wanted to set up your own business and what made you finally take the plunge?
From a very early age – but knew that I needed experience before taking the plunge. I went to a management consultancy McKinsey straight out of University to learn the ropes and have worked in commercial roles ever since.
What’s the best thing about your job?
Working with talented people to create and sell products that customers love and feel good wearing.
And the worst?
The daily pressure, the lack of resources – and piles of admin.
What one thing do you think the Government should do to help small businesses?
Provide clearer information on what support is available. There is lots – but often it feels quite hidden!
Who do you most admire in business?
Hard to pick one person – but Anita Roddick was amazing.
If you could give one piece of advice to small business owners, what would it be?
Think about how you will get the business to a position where you can work on it and not in it! The EMyth Revisited really helped me think about this.
If you hadn’t set up your company, what do you think you’d be doing instead?
Independent management consulting – which I did for a while before starting Yawn. With three young kids the freedom to dictate my own work load while working with bright people on interesting problems was fantastic.
