In a few words, tell us what your business does? 
We provide an outsourced HR retainer service to small businesses. Our clients benefit from our employment law advice and expertise.

 

When did you get involved in the setup of the business and what made you finally take the plunge?
Having worked in HR for many years, I could always see the benefit of an outsourced HR function. For small businesses it means the ability to focus on essential business development activity and leaving all compliance and employment law matters to the experts. When my mother setup the business in 2001, this is just the vision she had in mind and having since joined as CEO, I am fully committed to taking this forward.

 

What’s the best thing about your job? 
I get extreme satisfaction from being able to provide a resolution for my clients and helping them focus on their core business areas.

 

And the most challenging? 
As a small business owner myself, I wear many hats outside of HR, including accounts, marketing, compliance and many more. It can be a lot to keep track of at times.

 

Why did you choose KPMG Small Business Accounting?  
I wanted to move from my existing accounting software platform to Xero in a bid to streamline our processes. The KPMG Small Business Accounting service appealed to me because it not only included a Xero subscription, but also a dedicated accountant, on hand to provide assistance whenever I needed it.

Naturally, the outsourced model appealed to me but what I also liked was the fact that it would allow me to do my accounts on the go and save time. The cost of the service was also an added bonus.

 

How have KPMG Small Business Accounting and your dedicated KPMG accountant helped you? 
Our dedicated accountant has been extremely helpful. There was a lot to do right from the start as we were transitioning over a VAT quarter and coming up to our year end. Our accountant not only made the process a lot easier, but she was very responsive. She was able to successfully guide me through the process of migrating from my existing accounting software and help streamline some of our reporting processes.

 

What are two industry specific challenges your business is facing? 
A lot of what we do is helping small businesses implement legislation, so the impact of Brexit is something we’re looking at. It’s always tough to advise on the unknown so we’re working closely with our clients as things develop. We’re also operating in a growing market, which means there’s always competition and a need to stand out from crowd.

 

What one thing do you think the Government could do to help small businesses? 
From a company secretarial standpoint, streamlining some of the legislation we need to comply with, as a small business, would be a great start.

 

If you could give one piece of advice to small business owners, what would it be? 
My advice would be to focus on your service or product. Make sure it’s what people want, at a price they are willing to pay for it and profitable.

 

What’s next for your business? 
We will continue to be growth focused over the next year or so. At the moment our strategy involves acquisitions of small HR consultancies, partnerships with larger organisations and connecting with membership bodies to increase sales.
