Name, title & company name?
Dawn H Jones, Director, Hope Place.
In five words, tell us what your business does?
HR consultancy, training and development.
When did you know that you wanted to set up your own business and what made you finally take the plunge?
I knew that I wanted to offer training and development to people who were socially excluded or perceived themselves to be socially excluded in 2008. I then took a series of plunges in 2010, 2011 which culminated in moving from my job to working solely in the company. The underlying driver for me was ‘there’s so much more that I can do’.
What’s the best thing about your job?
Using my creativity to develop products and services.
And the worst?
Used to be accounts! Lately it has been finding the time to fit everything in but I now have a strategy for that.
What one thing do you think the Government should do to help small businesses?
Keep the £2,000 allowances for all small companies.
Who do you most admire in business?
I had to think about this one. I would say Bishop TD Jakes who is a successful pastor, businessman, author, playwright. His portfolio is diverse yet the core of all of his endeavours is the development of people.
If you could give one piece of advice to small business owners, what would it be?
Get good governance in place whether that be business terms and conditions, business insurance or a good accountant or all three.
If you hadn’t set up Hope place, what do you think you’d be doing instead?
Probably my old job.
